For this project I had to take nine existing characters and redraw them into a winter scene. I had to ensure the character’s individual personalities showed through in this scene while showing all of them having fun/being festive. I was largely given creative freedom as to what they were doing, just that it had to be winter/Christmas themed. The entire scene was drawn in Adobe Illustrator as the characters also needed to be able to be used on their own outside of the scene.
Cassette Player Raven
This piece came from a silly idea I had of a bird wearing headphones. It morphed into a raven and a Sony Walkman, as ravens align with my alternative fashion online store’s aesthetic and the Walkman is an iconic music player. This piece was created in Adobe Photoshop utilizing a variety of specialty brushes to give it a unique look.
Character Design: Bernard the Bat
Bernard here was developed for use in a webcomic and children’s book. He actually started life as a design I did for a Halloween garden banner. From there I reworked him slightly so as to be easier to draw consistantly. I also tweaked his coloring a bit and added some texture to the large solid gray parts to break them up and add some visual intrigue.
Another unique quality this character has is that his “wings” are represented as long sleeves reminiscent of Gary Oldman’s look in Bram Stokers Dracula. Representing his anatomy in this way allowed for him to have normal hands while at the same time maintain the expected bat physiology.
